freedom of speech;
Assalamualaikum and hi everyone, so here today I'm going to share my point of views as an urban teenager who live in a modern phase, about a topic in the politic theme, which is; the freedom of speech. I don't really sure and know how other teenagers would start it, but I'm surely going to start my writing and elaborate my opinions about something by giving the definition. Why? It is because the importance to know on how we interpret something as it is affected by how we define it, but background, life experiences, and surrounding are not excluded.
So, what is freedom of speech for you? As for a 19-years old girl like me, the freedom of speech is the right to speak out my voice, my opinions and I can say whatever I want, BUT I must obey and still under rules of not saying something that is offensive and be insensitive by saying about something that makes anger to the others especially when it comes to races, religions and country issues that could cause fight among the citizens especially here, in Malaysia.
Today, I'm going to share the freedom of speech with a specific scope-- as a journalist.
Who is journalist? Journalist is wide profession, even if you are a doctor, cleaner, or even a student; or even whoever you are, you can be a journalist. Do you have a diary, and did you tell your stories in your diary? Or maybe you share it online, maybe on Bloggeror Wordpress.
Mr. Nizal Mohamad whom also a journalist himself, once said in a media camp, held in UUM that a journalist must have some criteria -- in the journey of being a successful and respective one.
Alert. A journalist have to be alert with the surrounding. What is going on around, the current issues at some places near to them, in the country and all around the world as well.
Maturity. A journalist must have the sense of maturity, to show the stories or journal that has been published is reliable.
Independent- which have to know on how to stand on your own feet. And there, passion, conviction and integrity are needed as there are so many obstacles that have to be faced by journalists themselves.
There are few elements that should be considered in a journal that has been stated in americanpressinstitute.org. The first element is; truth. A journalist must write something that is true, because readers have to know something that they should and need to know, not only something that they want to know. We are aware that who always say the truth is an honest person- someone who can be trusted. So, in order to be trusted we have to convey right messages to the readers.
Second one, is verifying information. Despite you can say whatever you want, you have to make sure that your source of news or stories are verified by the right person. Once you write any stories or news, it must be done with full of responsibility. The pictures that you share along with your journal or article must be cleared, so there will be no hesitation and cannot be questioned by anyone.
Free is the third element. A journalist has to discover the stories and yes surely, cannot be bias. If the stories or news about current issues, journalists should aware that their journal is not affected by their own opinions. Don’t let your emotions control you whenever you write a journal. Don’t ever be afraid with any power, as you are only speak the truth.
The problems that I can see here in Malaysia related to teen themselves, are they did not realize that they are actually a journalist, as they share their stories, news or any ideas or opinions online and they share it. But sadly, they tend to let their emotions control them and they end up say something that is offensive as they only know that they can speak what their want, and forget that they still under terms and conditions stated by government.
Here, I want to ask to all teenagers in Malaysia let’s be positive. This is a democratic country, we have the freedom of speech, but you can’t run from disobey the rules that has been lined by our country.
I’m a teenager, and I have no guts to complain about something unless I have my solutions or effort to make it work better for me.
